A brief introduction to the NSSO

For more than 20 years the National Schools Symphony Orchestra has provided intensive, high quality orchestral experience for young players aged 9-19 years old. The annual course provides a stimulating and rewarding mix of individual coaching by expert tutors, playing in small ensembles, sectional and full rehearsals, and a final concert at a major national venue.

The essence of the week is the hallmark balance of concentrated music making and a vibrant social regime masterminded by our hugely experienced and committed pastoral team.

A spectacular location

Malvern College, the home of NSSO, is a spectacular location, which is easily accessed by rail and road. Accommodation is comfortable, with fantastic onsite catering able to meet all dietary requirements. The sports and leisure facilities, of which we enjoy the use of, are second to none, in addition to the excellent rehearsal facilities in the Music School.

The orchestra has been meeting at Malvern College for a number of years and in 2016 the school took over the management and ownership of NSSO. This has assured the future and guaranteed the continued quality of experience, both musically and socially, for all participants.

The NSSO Malvern College Scholarship offers 50% fee remission to the leader of each orchestra. If applicants which to apply for the scholarship, they are asked to indicate this on their application form.

The Concerts

We are delighted that all three orchestras will be performing once again at Malvern Theatres in July 2018. The Forum theatre has wonderful sight lines and a good acoustic, providing a marvellous venue for our closing celebration of a week’s hard work, at the end of another successful course.

Nestling at the foot of the Malvern Hills, the venue is a major centre for the arts in the West Midlands and is a short walk from Malvern College. Home of the famous Malvern Festivals, founded by Bernard Shaw and Barry Jackson in 1929, the theatre underwent a lottery-funded refurbishment in 1997. Hailed both locally and nationally as a model of artistic and architectural excellence, Malvern Theatres boasts one of the most diverse selection of plays, music, comedy, dance, film and education work to be found under a single roof anywhere in the country.
