11th – 18th July 2021

We continue to offer our unique Conducting Course, under the direction of Bjorn Bantock. Aimed at those in Year 10 and above, applications are open to all young musicians interested in learning the art of conducting.

Please note, there is only one place left on our unique Conducting Course.

The week includes:

• Posture and Technique Sessions with video feedback and analysis
• Daily individual lessons and group coaching
• Sessions with Chamber Ensembles and pianists
• Daily Tai Chi warm-ups and baton drills
• How to study and memorize the Score
• Attitude and Influence in working with an orchestra
• How to rehearse the orchestra
• How to work with choirs and singers
• Instrumentation, Transposition, Clefs, Fermatas, Terminology, Bowings
• Independence of the Hands Drills
• Studies in Pulse and Metre
• How to practise and discipline the mind and body
• How to provide leadership, guidance and inspiration

Applications are accepted on the recommendation of school or conservatoire Directors of Music and instrumental teachers. There is no formal audition. However, participants will be expected to play or sing in one of the NSSO ensembles, as appropriate, and will have the opportunity to observe/participate in rehearsals and coaching. There will be opportunity to conduct one of the NSSO orchestras but not usually in public performances.

The course fee includes all tuition and necessary music, full board and accommodation, and participation in the social and sporting programme.

Because of the nature of the course, we only offer residential places.  There will also be some preparation required before the course begins in terms of becoming familiar with pieces which will be studied during the week.
