NSSO 2023 April 1st-8th

NSSO Academy is a training orchestra made up of musicians of grade 3-5 standard. We will be playing fun and challenging repertoire, introducing the students to playing together in a large ensemble.

  • For players of grade 3-5 standard
  • Challenging orchestral repertoire throughout the week
  • Daily sectional and full orchestra rehearsals
  • Evening entertainment during the week including party and quiz nights
  • Extensive range of social and sporting activities, including swimming and a Malvern Hills walk
  • Full board and accommodation, all music and transport between venues is provided

About the Orchestra

Like NSSO Philharmonic and Sinfonia, at the start of the course, members work with specialist instrumental tutors, to help meet the technical challenges of the repertoire, before coming together in sectional rehearsals led by our Academy Heads of Section. The ensuing full orchestra rehearsals are thus carefully prepared for, and very positive experiences.

There is also a series of workshops aimed at strengthening the musical skills which underpin the ensemble playing.  Some of the time is spent playing in Wind Band and String Ensemble in order to address idiomatic ensemble issues.

Please note that unfortunately this year we are unable to accept Harp players for any of our ensembles. Saxophone players will only be able to apply for the Big Band course.

Music is at the heart of the NSSO Academy experience, but there is also a brilliant, inclusive activities programme organised by our experienced pastoral team. With swimming and field sports, quizzes, a chance to explore the Malvern Hills (under close supervision), indoor games and art/craft sessions, there is something for everybody!

The end of the week usually finds children exhausted but exhilarated by their musical achievements and delighting in new friendships.  In this way, we aim to foster a love of orchestral playing and a real desire to achieve ever higher standards through many years’ membership of NSSO.
