NSSO Academy is a training orchestra for musicians typically aged 8-13 years old and playing at grades 3-5 standard.
Like NSSO Philharmonic and Sinfonia, at the start of the course, members work with specialist instrumental tutors, to help meet the technical challenges of the repertoire, before coming together in sectional rehearsals led by our Academy Heads of Section. The ensuing full orchestra rehearsals are thus carefully prepared for, and very positive experiences.
Sessions are generally shorter than either Philharmonic or Sinfonia and the breaks more numerous. There is also a series of workshops aimed at strengthening the musical skills which underpin the ensemble playing. Some of the time is spent playing in Wind Band and String Ensemble in order to address idiomatic ensemble issues.
Music is at the heart of the NSSO Academy experience, but there is also a brilliant, inclusive activities programme organised by our experienced pastoral team. With swimming and field sports, quizzes, a chance to explore the Malvern Hills (under close supervision), indoor games and art/craft sessions, there is something for everybody!
The end of the week usually finds children exhausted but exhilarated by their musical achievements and delighting in new friendships. In this way, we aim to foster a love of orchestral playing and a real desire to achieve ever higher standards through many years’ membership of NSSO.
